Agents, recipients, and patients are semantic roles based on fundamental judgments that people make about events: who did it, to whom it happened, and what changed in the process. Semantic roles significantly determine the structure of a sentence. Therefore, engaging with them is important for a better understanding of German grammar, as well as for stylistic nuances such as the use of the passive voice and the arrangement of sentence elements. Semantic roles are rarely treated systematically in grammar handbooks, despite the wealth of scientific literature on this topic. This volume gradually and comprehensibly presents the key findings about semantic roles. The material conveyed in each chapter can be tested through exercises. The book can serve as a foundation for teaching courses.
