Product details

Does the name "Hintergasse" carry a disrespectful connotation that supposedly devalues the business situation, or is it an immutable aspect of urban history as a historical designation? When the renaming of the square-like alley in Winterthur's old town was demanded around 1900, opinions on the naming were diametrically opposed. In 1904, "Steinberggasse" was ultimately chosen as the new name - however, despite the efforts of the neighborhood association, it never became a proper "street." This dispute is characteristic of an alley that, like today, stands in the shadow of the Marktgasse, but precisely for that reason has been able to preserve its substance and appearance. Over the centuries, wealthy and influential individuals lived on Hintergasse, but everyday life here was certainly more tranquil and focused on small businesses.
