Born in 1936, this was a childhood and youth spent between war and peace, between dictatorship and democracy, between material hardship and economic miracle. We remember shopping with ration cards, receiving letters from fathers at the front, bombings and fleeing, playing in rubble-strewn landscapes, coal thefts and rationing trips, CARE packages and school meals. Just as vividly as homemade toys, the first chewing gum, the first bicycle, rare trips to the cinema, and the flirtation at the dance school.
