Companies are increasingly interconnected in a globalizing world in ever more complex ways. This multifaceted networking not only presents interesting business opportunities and new markets but also carries the potential for conflict. Since disputes can, in extreme cases, destroy livelihoods, effective conflict management is essential for sustainable business success today. Mediation, as an alternative dispute resolution method, is currently gaining more attention in the public eye. This is particularly due to the Directive 2008/52/EC of the European Parliament, adopted on May 21, 2008, concerning certain aspects of mediation in civil and commercial matters. However, mediation is often associated with an emotional touch, leading many to believe that an idealistic notion of reconciliation is being promoted in the business world.
