On November 7, 1917, Max Weber spoke at the Schwabinger bookstore Steinike to liberal students about "Science as a Vocation." Karl Löwith, Ernst Robert Curtius, and Helmut Plessner joined Weber in questioning the future of a modernity that was intellectually and economically unleashed. The texts by his contemporaries gathered in this volume alongside Weber's legendary essay evoke his thoughts on the "disenchantment of the world," which challenge us today to reflect on the scope and limits of rational action in the face of ideological worldviews.
