Product details
The aim of this book is to illustrate the dynamic relationship between society and science. The increasingly close interaction between these two areas is an indicator of the emergence of a new type of science: a contextualized or context-sensitive science. Although evidence for a tighter, interactive relationship between society and science is mounting, the current debate still revolves around drawing a demarcation line between the two fields in one way or another. It is often assumed that the flow of communication only goes in one direction - from science to society - while the transformative effects of communication in the opposite direction receive little attention. The authors demonstrate that such communications are increasing in contemporary society, leading to a transformation of science not only in its institutions and research practices but also in its epistemological core. To adequately understand the co-evolution of society and science, they develop an open and dynamic structure that addresses the contextualization of knowledge in a new public space. Everything you ever wanted to know about the knowledge society is brought to light by Nowotny, Scott, and Gibbons in "Re-thinking science," the sequel to their acclaimed book "The new production of knowledge" (1994). This is an excellent book, full of empirical insights and intellectual visions. "Re-thinking science" is both reliable and robust. The authors guide us beyond the dichotomies of science and society into their new work, into a new agora of interactive forces, where the old institutional boundaries of science, industry, and government are transcended. "Re-thinking science" reimagines society.
