In its 160-year history, the Diakoniewerk Halle has set milestones in care and service to humanity. Young women chose to live as deaconesses in a community of faith, life, and service. They worked in elderly and healthcare, children's and disability services, as well as in pastoral care. A new building was constructed at the current location on Mühlweg in 1868, which opened as Halle's first modern large hospital. Through training as caregivers, many young women were given the opportunity to lead an independent life. Their work and values not only shaped the social structures in Halle but also in the surrounding areas.
