Nobility was (and is) by definition a class "with a past." It defines itself through ancestors, role models, and predecessors. Of course, this past has always been subject to interpretation and instrumentalization. The respective present created conditions and challenges that the noble past had to adapt to. This volume deals with this topic, focusing on the decisive moments of tradition-conscious noble self-determination: family honor, the chivalric ideal, and princely service.
