Criticism is as important in a democracy as air is for breathing. However, if one wants to be taken seriously and counter populist statements, one should not resort to simplistic slogans oneself. Instead, one should argue for a democratic political culture with reason and good arguments. This argumentation training helps to further develop one's political judgment and enhance individual political agency. The authors address common clichés without intending to convert anyone, in order to first understand and take seriously the underlying disappointments, frustrations, and the associated anger, thereby elevating the level of discussion about politics and politicians. In this way, every everyday conversation about politics, including the casual gatherings, can become an opportunity to engage with politics.
