On July 15, 2008, Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of then Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was temporarily detained in Geneva. The accusation: he and his wife had mistreated their staff. The Gaddafi clan saw this as a stain on their family honor and began an unrelenting campaign of revenge against Switzerland, which would last two years and become known as the "Libya Crisis" in history books. To extract concessions from the Swiss government, the Libyan regime took two men hostage: Swiss national Max Göldi, then 53 years old and working for ABB in Libya, and dual Swiss-Tunisian citizen Rachid Hamdani, 67 years old.
