Niklaus Flütsch was born in Zurich in 1964. As Bettina, the child exhibited all external signs of being a girl, was clearly perceived as such by those around them, but felt like a boy. At the age of four, they asked their mother if they could have their long hair cut. The disappointment that a male genitalia did not automatically grow with the falling hair was immense. The child never spoke about their emotional distress, not even during puberty. They managed as best as possible with their female body, later studied medicine, and became a gynecologist. At the age of 46, Niklaus, as he was now called, decided to transition. During the subsequent process, he spoke for the first time about his struggles with his parents, siblings, patients, friends, and colleagues.
