Product details

With contributions from Sabine Biebl, Stefan Hirschauer, Rembert Hüser, Annette Keck, Helmut Lethen, Maren Möhring, Inka Mülder-Bach, Verena Mund, Ralph J. Poole, MaryAnn Snyder-Körber, Ilke Vehling, and Heide Volkening. Young working women did not become the subject of productive fantasies only in the 1920s, as reflected in films, literature, art, popular music, and advertising, as well as in academic discourse. Their emergence in public life is already associated with concerns about the loosening of morals in the second half of the 19th century, which is expressed in the ambiguity of the term 'Working Girl.' The term is applicable to both working women in general and prostitutes, marking a central ambivalence: the economization of love and sexuality on one hand, and the romanticization of work on the other.
