The gender order of the 1950s and 1960s was not as uniform as it is often portrayed. This study reveals the fractures that indicate and prepare for the reorganization after 1968. The presence of mothers in the labor market has been underestimated, as shown by the analysis of the statistical development of female employment. The employment of married women with children outside the home visibly increased in Switzerland, as in most Western industrial nations, after World War II. On the social and political agenda, it even became one of the most important topics: under the term "mother's work," parties, associations, academia, and the media debated controversially and with great emotion the possible impacts of maternal employment on the family.
