Rarely has a German poet been celebrated during his lifetime as much as Barthold Heinrich Brockes. His main work is the collection of poems from the nine-part "Earthly Delight in God," the first and second parts of which are presented in this volume. He was the first to place nature at the center of great poetry in the German-speaking world - in didactic poems, and even more so in descriptions of landscapes and gardens. Brockes' vivid poetry combines knowledge, representations, and speculations from natural history collections with poetic motifs from classical antiquity and biblical psalm poetry. Brockes is a rhetorical poet. His poetry stands in the tradition of the great European creation poems since antiquity. It aims to delight, move, and educate. It seeks to honor the love, infinity, and omnipotence of its Creator in the diversity and beauty of nature.
