Theodor Fontane, born in 1819 in Neuruppin (Brandenburg), initially became a pharmacist like his father. In 1849, he definitively gave up this profession to work as a writer. After working as a foreign correspondent, war reporter, and theater critic, he began writing his famous novels and stories at nearly sixty years old. He died in 1898 in Berlin.
