Most people are dilettantes of life. Their wisdom consists solely of seeking pleasure and avoiding displeasure. In their hands, everything becomes a means to an end. Nothing is done for its own sake, nothing provides immediate satisfaction; everything is intended to serve something else. They incessantly sacrifice today for tomorrow. The ultimate goal is a phantom of wealth and status, a misty image that dissipates as soon as it is attained. Yet, strangely enough, all this effort is wasted: the professional pleasure-seeker remains unfulfilled. Of the two paths of life, this is the broad path that leads to damnation.
