Product details

Some anti-war writers emigrated to Switzerland during World War I because they could not freely publish works or thoughts in their home countries. In Switzerland, they found limited opportunities to write against the war. This study examines the diverse views on the war from seven authors from France, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. What positions did they hold? How did these assessments change as the war progressed? How do their arguments differ from those of war proponents? Some authors became targets of both domestic and opposing propaganda. Romain Rolland's "Au-dessus de la Mêlée" serves as an example: Is this work truly a prime example of anti-war sentiment? Why was it suppressed by French censorship and criticized in Germany? To answer these questions, all writings published by the seven authors during their stay in Switzerland serve as the source material.
