This study addresses and discusses the thoughts of the contemporary French philosopher Jean-Luc Marion. It assumes that the concept of "donation" (the act of giving) holds the status of a "key metaphor" within Marion's work. Looking at the theological writings of the young Marion, it becomes evident that "donation" targets the core of the Christian faith and refers to the act of surrender in the life and death of Jesus Christ. Marion's later works on phenomenology are to be distinguished from this. Engaging primarily with Husserl and Heidegger, an attempt is made here to affirm "donation" as the deepest determination of the phenomenon: The phenomenon appears because it already exists.
