The Peruvian poet César Vallejo, who died at the age of just 46 in 1938 in Paris, is one of the great poetic innovators of the Spanish language in the 20th century. Always ahead of the literary movements of his time, each of his books is stylistically unique and revolutionary both linguistically and conceptually. His impact on the poetry of his and subsequent generations is comparable to that of Lorca; in the English-speaking world, he is regarded by many younger authors as the most significant Spanish-speaking poet overall. Vallejo's poetic work has been available for several years in a four-volume German translation, yet compared to García Lorca, Pablo Neruda, or Octavio Paz, his reception in the German-speaking world remains quite marginal. The presentation of César Vallejo as a poet aims to help bridge this gap.
