The poems of Jan Koneffke strive to remember what simultaneously opposes and resists forgetting, what may be repressed or denied, yet becomes all the more powerful. Here, however, it is shaped; the lament is voiced again, the shame confessed once more, and the poet allows the anger to speak anew, gathering life once again and bearing its weight. Childhood in the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1960s and 70s is marked by questions of guilt that strain the boy's capacity to think and feel in such a way that it is hardly distinguishable between normality and abyss. The surface of the "Bienenstich Sundays," the "pudding skin" on the "motherland, to which I helplessly clung / hated childhood land that I miss" - "sweating half into bed, half onto paper" - the poet must find his way through this "double land" of division.
