According to UNESCO studies, 12 million African slaves were reportedly transported by Europeans to the so-called New World. The collective memory of this largest human trafficking in world history has been preserved in ritual practices such as Brazilian Candomblé, Haitian Voodoo, and Cuban Santeria, despite the forced Catholicization of the slaves.
