Most photographic works about prostitution depict the women and men themselves. Not so with Yoshiko Kusano's photo essay "Bordelle." The rooms where the world's oldest profession offers its services reflect the country's culture and the taste of the time. Yoshiko Kusano photographed the rooms, which also serve as living spaces for many prostitutes, in various Central European countries and in Japan—without artificial light. The interior design thus reveals not only the clichés of what an erotic atmosphere is supposed to look like but also provides insights into the backgrounds and desires of the women. Above all, it symbolically represents the taste and knowledge of design that generally prevails in each respective country. The book presents the photographs alongside an introductory text about Yoshiko Kusano's photography and interior design.
