Natalie Czech's new body of work is titled "to icon" and explores how something becomes an icon. She focuses on everyday pictograms, visual communication shortcuts that exist in the space between image and text. Czech collects fields of terms that an icon encompasses and stages the semantic field in a photograph. To do this, she photographs clothing and accessories in the style of fashion and product photography, interpreting the shape of an icon through the outlines, folds, or seams of the objects, and directly applying them to the photo. Since the meaning and use of an icon can vary in digital applications, the artist adds a type of product label to the photographed objects, as is common with goods: "Draw / Drafts / Draft Reviews / Write a Review / Update Info / Edit / Text // Wrong?" In this way, Czech reveals digital everyday poetry and combines it with concept.
