"Calm Xenions" is what Goethe called a collection of thoughts and wisdom sayings that form an important part of his later work. "Calm," Goethe noted in a letter, should be understood quite ironically; for the sayings are quite profound. Many of these verses have become popular in their own right and exemplify Goethe's wisdom in old age, but as a complete work, the "Calm Xenions" have rarely been recognized. They are presented here in the only currently available standalone edition. Goethe compiled this collection of sayings for print in six "books." The first three were published successively in the magazine "On Art and Antiquity," while books four to six were published later in the "Final Edition." The themes include literature and art, science and religion, history and contemporary history. Goethe was involved in the composition of the "Calm Xenions.".
