The Czech painter Zdeněk Sýkora (1920–2011) is predominantly regarded in literature as a computer artist. In fact, Sýkora used a computer as early as the 1960s to program his structural paintings, through which he gained recognition in the West and was invited to documenta 4 in 1968. However, he merely used the computer as a technical tool and did not make the structures of his paintings dependent on a program. The book "Zdeněk Sýkora – the Painter" emphasizes the painterly elements of his art, thereby relativizing the significance of the computer in his work. The author, Hans-Peter Riese, has been friends with Sýkora since the mid-1960s and has written numerous texts about his work. This book is the first comprehensive presentation of Sýkora's entire oeuvre in the German language.
