The Other Journey of Alexander von Humboldt: The Survey of Asia. At the invitation of Tsar Nicholas I, Alexander von Humboldt undertook an expedition in 1829 from Petersburg through Moscow to the Ural Mountains, the Altai Mountains, the Caspian Sea, and all the way to Baty at the Chinese border. He compiled his observations in an original work that was first published in French in 1843. Oliver Lubrich has revised, completed, and compared the only German translation (by Wilhelm Mahlmann, 1844) with the French original. In the blend of travel impressions and research report, Humboldt develops a new concept of spatial description that serves as the foundation for his later work 'Kosmos.'
