Under the successors of King Dagobert I, who had been a strong ruler, the power of the Merovingian monarchs gradually diminished. In the Frankish realms, the mayors of the palace effectively took over the governance, while the individual tribal duchies developed increasing autonomy. Eventually, the Austrasian mayor of the palace, Charles Martel, succeeded in establishing sole rule over the kingdom. However, a true dynastic change only occurred under his son Pepin, the first king from the Carolingian dynasty. The present third volume provides a detailed examination of the weapons and riding equipment, as well as the tactics and organization of the warriors serving in the Frankish army. Although the artistic reconstructions this time focus on late Merovingian cavalry, they also depict foot soldiers from the 7th century.
