Modern societies have always faced the challenge of enabling coexistence among different confessions, ethnicities, and so on. Concepts like that of a multicultural society have recently come under criticism. Carlo Strenger argues that the West has indeed scored an "own goal" with the idea of Political Correctness, as it has now become a target of intolerance itself. Using concrete examples, Strenger explains his counter-model of "civilized contempt," an attitude from which people can disdain positions they consider irrational or immoral, without denying the humanity of those who hold them.
