The Californian millionaire Louise Arner Boyd undertook extensive travels to exotic places as an independent woman during the Roaring Twenties of the last century. During a tourist trip to the Arctic ice in Norway, she fell in love with the white wilderness and dedicated herself to exploring the polar region. In 1926, she organized a hunting trip to Franz Josef Land and in 1928 searched in vain for the missing Roald Amundsen. Between 1931 and 1938, she pursued scientific goals on four additional Arctic expeditions by involving geologists, surveyors, and biologists, while she herself photographed, filmed, and collected botanical specimens of the ice and the fascinating landscapes of the Arctic.
