Anyone who wants to understand the social life of people must certainly be able to speak about the variable. This requires a specific concept of the historical. However, this concept is at risk of being lost not only in historicist, post-historicist, and postmodern methodologies but also in contemporary philosophy.

In contrast, the present volume, in the tradition of critical philosophy of history, argues that thinking is historical and determined in that its concepts emerge from ongoing critique and acquire their specific determination in this process. The authors reconstruct this thesis from theoretical foundations.

Michael Städtler, born in 1970, studied philosophy and literary studies in Hanover. He is an adjunct professor of philosophy at the University of Münster and has been teaching at the University of Wuppertal since 2016. He is a board member of the Institute for Social Sciences and the Peter Bulthaup Archive.
