Product details

In May 1926, banker, entrepreneur, and honorary consul Carl Ludwig Pinschof embarks on one last great journey from Melbourne to Vienna. Accompanied by his eldest daughter, her husband, and the young secretary Will, the long voyage unfolds the panorama of an extraordinary life. Through conversations and memories, the image of a man who operated between two worlds emerges: between Vienna and Melbourne, between business and art, between a sense of duty and personal passion. Central moments of his life—the great love for opera singer Elise Wiedermann, the legendary salon on Mount Macedon, and his commitment to artists of the Heidelberg School—intertwine with the political and social upheavals of the time. The narrative depicts an era of profound tensions: economic uncertainty, global disruptions, and a world in transition shape the backdrop of this biographical-literary approach. In this way, the story resonates with the present, illustrating how the great questions of each era echo the past. The volume is complemented by poems from composer and provocateur George Marshall-Hall, which offer rare insights into the intellectual world of Australian society around 1900. Additionally, the book includes research on the history of the Pinschof family—starting from the still-preserved bank building in downtown Vienna—a detailed family tree, and poems by Eugen Rudolf Pinschof.
