The thinking and actions of urban and spatial planners often still focus on the problems of our old and core cities. The starting point of Sieverts' considerations is the observation that the compact historical European city is dissolving and making way for a completely different, globally spreading form of urbanization: the urbanized landscape or the landscaped city, which Sieverts refers to as the "intercity." The idea of the "European city" is all the more worth preserving the more boldly it is seen as a special part of an urban entity that is constantly undergoing transformation and no longer presents a "picture.".
