This is the Harz: What a delight the simple, hearty meal is! The recipes in this book tell us about it. The earliest ones have been passed down from the monastery and herb kitchens. Each generation added its own experiences. When we try them out, we find ourselves back in grandmother's kitchen. Traditions of Harz's culinary culture can be discovered in this book: Red Höhenvieh cattle grazing on the Harz meadows, a herd of goats accompanied by a shepherd, the unmistakable aroma of Harz cheese, the abundance of fish in the rivers and ponds, the game in the dark forests, the old fruit varieties, and the diversity of chocolate. What makes the culinary Harz unique and special are the people who bring it to our plates. With care for the tried and true, courage for the new, and artisanal skill. This inspires a passion for cooking, for a beautifully set table, and for enjoyable gatherings, tickling our taste buds and warming our hearts: This is the Harz.

3. Bussert Dr. + Stadeler Andreas Pawel
This industrial railway was unique in Germany. It existed for twelve years, born out of the impossibility of climbing the steep northern edge of the Harz Mountains with a standard gauge railway. With inventive spirit, a solution was found for transporting the Hüttenröder iron ores to the Blankenburg smelter (Harzer Werke). The experiences with mine railways led to a stepped track layout with several chutes or tipping points. The transport flow of this railway had to overcome more than 200 meters in elevation. It was only when Albert Schneider succeeded in mastering the mountains using Abt's rack and a new track that the ore incline railway was discontinued. Even today, one can hike along the former track layout of the ore incline railway and discover the traces of this engineering masterpiece.
