4. Iittala Aalto Collection Vase
Aalto Collection Vase. Strangely created over 70 years ago under the project title "Leather Pants of an Eskimo Woman" in the studio of architect Alvar Aalto: the "Savoy" vases quickly won first prize in a design competition. This selection was meant to represent Finland at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. Today, it is hard to imagine the waves the "Savoy" vases once made. When iittala presented the vases at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, their mysterious shape was in stark contrast to the recognized, machine-oriented thinking of that time. Each glass vase is still mouth-blown today, with the Finnish brand relying on the expertise and knowledge of its skilled craftsmen, who meticulously attend to the individual shape of each flower vase: it passes through no less than seven hands before the vase earns the name of its designer. What inspired the creator to the wave-like form of his vase objects remains unfathomable – but it perfectly aligns with Alvar Aalto's general statement that "form is a mystery." iittala now presents the ever-youthful flower vase in a special Collection Edition featuring appealing shades.
5. Iittala Ruutu Vase
Ruutu Vase. The Finnish brand iittala has always been a hub for Scandinavian product designers, but occasionally, they also welcome a Central or Southern European designer through the door. This is the case with the Parisian brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec: At first glance, the shape of the vases may not seem spectacular. However, it truly is: Instead of creating rectangular shapes, the Bouroullecs – as the Finnish name suggests – design a diamond shape, or in other words, the typical rectangle is pressed into a rhombus or diamond shape. Additionally, each flower vase is not produced by machine but is individually mouth-blown into a steel mold and hand-finished to achieve a special luster on the surfaces: This production method requires highly skilled craftsmen and takes about 24 hours per flower vase! Only this meticulous care in iittala's production brings to life the particularly intense and profound color world created by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for the Ruutu Vase, allowing it to develop a magical, flowing quality with the help of incoming light. Awarded the reddot design award 2015.
6. Iittala Alvar Aalto Vase
