Does the smartphone have to be connected to the same WLAN for control or can I also switch the fan on and off from a distance of 353.21 km :)?

The Smart Fan can be switched on and off via the Mi Home app from anywhere in the world, as long as you have the Wi-Fi in operation at home and the Smart Fan is connected to this Wi-Fi and the Mi Home app.
