Is it normal that the whole appliance (except the handle) gets very hot? When I close the lid, I have to put my hand on the silver part of the lid (I don't have enough strength with the handle alone). But that's not possible because the handle gets too hot. It only works with oven gloves.

Yes, it is quite strict, although I and the older children ( teenagers) can handle it if the toast is not too thick, but otherwise we have been very happy with it for almost 2 years.

It gets warm well, which is why you should only use the handles, that's what they're on for.
