You do not need a hose to operate the unit. Only if you pipe it directly to a drain is it necessary.

With the hose you are freer, better if directed to a large container, or even better, if possible, connect it
to a drain if possible, as in a laundry room. However, you can also use it without a hose as long as you empty it regularly.
