With this steamer, is it also possible to place both containers directly on top of each other without the centre piece, so that only the lower cooker can be used for both?

Yes, you can. It's just a shaky business. But I don't really see the point. Saving electricity...? Or do you have several containers? I have four of them. But the centre pieces are for diverting the steam. But you have to rebuild it a bit...
But I can answer your question with "YES".
