Can this bicycle carrier not be used with a normal, conventional trailer coupling with the round ball head?

No, only on the hitch with the cross pin (see/picture 7 in the photo gallery, Thule EasyFold XT F 2.). However, the same model is also available for normal couplings without this cross pin.
