I have a stupid question: why does this thing need a power connection if I have to turn the pedals? :) Shouldn't I be able to generate more than enough power with it?!

The electric power is to slow you down... on the simulated hills. The magnetic FLUX created by the electricity is to slow down the flywheel inside what makes you put more effort to spin it. Like going up the hill. On going down it makes it spin as fast as 90km/h so you need to use breakes instead! Ok, just kidding about down hill ;-) Up hill is right! Cheers!
