From a technical perspective, the blind rivet consists of two components: the hollow rivet and the rivet mandrel. While with screws, clinching, and punch riveting, the component must always be accessible from both sides, the special feature of the blind rivet is that only one-sided accessibility is required. During the setting process, the mandrel is pulled with the jaws of the setting device, deforming the hollow rivet until it fits firmly in the component as predefined. Finally, the mandrel breaks off at the designated point, the predetermined breaking point, and the remaining mandrel can be sent for recycling.

The remaining mandrel is the part of the mandrel that remains in the hollow rivet and can take on an additional securing function depending on the application.
