"Back to the city, forward to the sun" is the motto of Walter Stelzhammer. The Austrian is not an architect of grand gestures or forms ripped from their urban context. His numerous residential buildings, many of which are exemplary revitalizations of old structures, convey a clear message: they aim to serve the well-being and coexistence of people. Through manageable spatial relationships, enclosed pathways, and sightlines, they create a quality of dense living that connects to Viennese tradition, as well as to Turkish urban building tradition and spatial culture. Stelzhammer, who has familial ties to Turkey, has engaged deeply with these traditions. This richly illustrated monograph belongs in every architecture library.
