The whale shark, like the second largest fish in the world, the sunfish, is a filter feeder. To eat, the animal extends out of its enormous jaws and passively filters everything that comes its way. This mechanism is theorized to be a technique known as cross-flow filtration, similar to that of some bony fish and baleen whales.
