The publicly traded company is one of the largest construction companies in Europe and has its German headquarters in Cologne as well as an Austrian headquarters in Vienna. The company began in 1866 under the name Remy und Reifenrath in Herborn, manufacturing iron constructions as well as agricultural tools and machines designed by Reifenrath. By 1882, the company owned two steam rollers for road construction and agricultural equipment that were lent to neighboring communities. In 1923, the Strassenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Niederlahnstein (shortened to Strabag) was founded. Just six years later, the company employed about 1,400 people and soon moved its headquarters to Cologne. Today, Strabag operates throughout Europe and also has large projects abroad.
