DPD (Deutscher Paketdienst) was founded in 1976 by 18 leading German freight companies. Among the founding members were the Honold Logistics Group, Hellmann, Zufall, Streck Transport, Cordes & Simon, TTF, Denkhaus, and Zeitfracht. In its founding year, 1.4 million packages were already recorded in Germany, which increased over the years to 2.5 million packages daily by 2006. In 1999, the French postal company La Poste acquired 83.32% of the DPD parcel service and integrated the transport company into its subsidiary Geopost. The established name DPD was retained, and the individual country-specific branches of Geopost were expanded.
