The Northrop F-5 is a twin-engine lightweight fighter aircraft, whose development began with preliminary studies in 1950 and became concrete in 1962 under President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy allocated significant funding for advanced fighter aircraft for the USA and its allies in the fight against communism, which indirectly rekindled the interest of the USAF in the FX program. The F-5A Freedom Fighter entered series production in 1963. The first customer was Norway, which received its 108 units between 1966 and 1972. The USAF took delivery of its first aircraft in January 1964. South Vietnam also quickly received the new fighter, which it used in combat against the communist North. In this war, the Freedom Fighter earned its nickname 'Tiger.' The Cobi model 5858 features the insignia of the Luftforsvaret, the Royal Norwegian Air Force.
