The Class 66 was developed in the 1990s on behalf of the British railway company English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) as a successor design to the Class 59 by EMD. It is the most produced locomotive in the UK. However, the six-axle diesel locomotive, manufactured in Canada, is also very successful in continental Europe. In 2005, a revised version was launched under the designation Class 77. The locomotives are primarily used in heavy freight train service.
