The Bismarck, the flagship of the German Navy, was, alongside the Tirpitz, the largest German warship, with a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2,092 men. Commissioned on August 24, 1940, it set sail for Operation Rheinübung on May 18, 1941. However, together with the Prinz Eugen, it was detected early by British aerial reconnaissance. In the encounter with the Hood, the Bismarck sank it on May 24, 1941.
