The modern BR 23 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn "survived" the Prussian P 8 – which was intended as its replacement – by only one year. It delivered 1,314 kW, weighed 131.8 tons, and could travel at a speed of 110 km/h going forward or 85 km/h with the tender leading. As of December 31, 1971, 76 units were in service and exclusively stationed at three railway depots (Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, and Crailsheim). After its official retirement in December 1975, 8 specimens have been preserved in partially operational condition by clubs and museums for future generations.
