Since the character received an extremely positive response from the readership of the Superman comics, with readers demanding more stories featuring Supergirl, the decision-makers at DC Comics, the publisher of the Superman series at that time and still today, decided to no longer use Supergirl solely as a supporting character in Superman stories, but to dedicate her own stories to the character, in which Supergirl would take on the role of the main character driving the plot.
